Leafly calls it a mostly indica strain and rates it mostly calming, Weedmaps lists it as an indica, and AllBud and Royal Queen Seeds put the split at 90% indica, 10% sativa.1,2,5,6 Of its three reported parents, Afghani is an indica landrace, while Leafly files Mendocino Purps and Skunk #1 as hybrids.10,11,12

No, but the two are easy to confuse. Leafly gives Granddaddy Purple the same three parents it gives Grape Ape, Mendo Purps, Skunk and Afghani, while noting that others call GDP Big Bud × Purple Urkle, which is what Weedmaps lists.15,16 Both are grape-flavored indicas whose Leafly users report the same top effects.1,15
No. Leafly describes dense buds wreathed in deep purple leaves that darken late in flowering, but Royal Queen Seeds says the color develops when nights are cool in late flowering, and Weedmaps describes flowers ranging from deep green to purple.1,2,14 The pigment is anthocyanin, and temperature and lighting affect how much shows.7

Grape Ape is well known without topping sales charts. It does not appear in Leafly’s best-selling strains of 2025, where Granddaddy Purple ranked #2, in Cannabis Business Times’ Headset-based California top-10 lists for 2024 and 2025, in Headset’s 2020 strain report, or among the top sellers in 23 adult-use states in August 2026.17,18,19,20,21
Its footprint is elsewhere. Leafly’s list of the 100 best strains of all time includes it among strains for feeling relaxed, its Leafly page has 2,275 ratings, and in 2016 Oregon’s liquor commission barred the name from cannabis packaging as one of 14 names it considered appealing to children.1,22,23,24 A Grape Ape wax won Best Concentrates at the 2011 High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in Denver, and Leafly describes Zkittlez as an alleged Grape Ape × Grapefruit cross.25,26
