How published THC figures compare

Strain databases publish a single figure or a range: Leafly lists 18%, AllBud 18–21% and Weedmaps 18–27%, and Leafly’s 2015 strain highlight gave 15–23%.2,3,4,5 Seed sellers advertise 20%: Royal Queen Seeds says "up to 20%", with some phenotypes claimed as high as 35%, and Barney’s Farm’s version is listed at 20%.6,7,8 In state lab results the median was 18.42%, 90% of tests came in below 24.16% and the highest single result was 30.43%, so Weedmaps’ upper figure and the seed catalogs describe the top of the range rather than typical flower.1

The state mix matters. Nevada 15.81% (95 tests), Washington 20.65% (55 tests), Michigan 18.90% (32 tests): Nevada, which supplies the most tests, has the lowest median and Washington the highest.1 The year with the most tests, 2022 (101), also has the lowest yearly median among years with 20 or more tests, 15.88%.1

Leafly’s terpene profile lists myrcene first, then pinene and caryophyllene.2 Our 99 tests with individual terpene values, 95 of them from Nevada labs, rank β-caryophyllene 0.42%, α-pinene 0.25%, α-humulene 0.24% by median, with β-myrcene at 0.10%.1 Different labs, products and years can produce different rankings; only a batch’s own certificate describes that batch.

Limits of this data

  • Coverage is uneven. NV (95), WA (55), MI (32), MD (8) supply most of the 202 tests, with CO (6), MA (3), CT (2), CA (1) adding the rest; Oregon and Rhode Island results carry no product names and could not be matched.
  • Washington tests count only when the strain field and the product name both name the strain; 231 Washington flower results with only a generic product name (such as "Flower Lot") were left out.
  • Some labs report higher THC than others, so we publish medians and middle ranges rather than maxima. One lab supplied 44.1% of these tests (23 labs in total), and one producer accounts for 45.1% of the 162 tests that record a producer.
  • Terpene medians come from 99 tests with individual terpene values, 95 of them from Nevada labs; Maryland reports only total terpenes, and Washington and Michigan report none. We matched names strictly: crosses and near-miss names (for example "Grape Ape/Larry OG") are excluded and counted, and duplicate certificates are removed.
