It was not banned as a strain. In 2016 Oregon’s liquor commission barred 14 strain names, Grape Ape included, from packaging and labels because they referred to cartoon characters or children’s products; stores could still sell the strain under another name or its initials.15,16

Is Grape Ape named after the cartoon?

Leafly and Weedmaps say the name describes its grape smell and flavor.1,4 The Great Grape Ape Show, a 1975 Hanna-Barbera cartoon about a giant purple gorilla, shares the name, and Oregon regulators grouped it with names that refer to cartoon characters when they barred it from packaging in 2016.15,17
